A Sunday night musing on the Indian democracy after all that’s gone down recently. The Indian democracy is one that’s alive but needs development in order to unlock the next level of its statehood, which will also quicken economic growth.
The first step needs to be enabling some basic level of dialogue between the government and opposition. Communication lines need to be thrown open for discussions and there needs to exist a level of bi-partisanship on certain issues.
Currently, the government is stuck in its rhetoric and the opposition is stuck being conspiracists. Instead, the government should work on legislation, and at times consult the opposition. The opposition must analyse legislation, agreeing with some and presenting competitive alternatives for the others. This is my maximalist view, since I believe it increases the chances of the best ideas coming forward. It’s the government’s and particularly the PM’s job to take the first step in opening the floodgates of dialogue.
